Origin of giving a wedding gift

Since when, giving a wedding gift to a couple to honor their joining in marriage, become a practice? Difficult to say. But historians believe the practice of giving a wedding gift dates as far as back to the Athenians. These people offered presents to the couple about to enter into an agreement “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, for sickness or for health”. Close friends offered articles of household items as a present to enable the couple to start their life.

The Grecian historians have more to tell us on the practice. The gifts used to form a gorgeous display and that friends and relatives competed with each other. Wedding gift sets include vessels of gold and silver, precious jewels, vases, articles of ornament, magnificent wearing apparel, as well as couches, tables and other household appurtenances.

Today giving a wedding gift is an all-important part of the ceremony or etiquette of marriage. Thanks to the financial crunch many people face, the present practice is limited to give a simple and useful item to the couple. A wedding registry in the local departmental store is now a common practice. People who wish to give often go to the store when a registry is opened in the name of the couple and one can contribute whatever they can to the register and the couple can choose items which are useful to them to start their life.
